The village of Colombières- sur-Orb lays in the heart of the Natural Park of the Haute Languedoc, at the foot of the Caroux Mountain, a 1091 metre rock formation. In the Mediterranean valleys you will find vineyards and orchards. On the higher slopes above, there are Alpine-like broom and heather moors.
From this mountain springs the source of our stream, the Arles. Ten minutes walk away from the property you can swim in the cool, refreshing water of the Arles or in the Orb River.
There are numerous outdoor activities; swimming in the rivers or the sea (an hour’s drive away); running or walking (there are some excellent designated walking tracks and the area is a popular venue for serious hikers); rock climbing and horse riding. From the highest points on a clear day you can see the Gulf of Lyon from Provence in the east to the Pyrenees in the west!
Canoes and kayaks are available for hire on the Orb, with stretches of the river having varying degrees of difficulty. White water gorges for the more adventurous in kayaks and calm, slower running water for a more sedate canoe trip! Rock climbers are in their element here with organised rock climbing and hire of equipment available in the Gorges d’Héric. There are off-road cycle tracks as well as tarmac cycle tracks for cyclists. Beautiful plants and trees abound for keen naturalists and a there is a plethora of bird life for bird watchers.
Down on the coastal
plain, a necklace of ancient towns, each one a pearl of history and culture
spanning 2000 years. From the plain looking to the north, there are panoramic
views of the forests and to the south, the Mediterranean Sea lies sparkling
in the sun.
is a small grocery shop in Colombières-sur-Orb which sells basic requirements,
bread and other regional produce.
Lamalou-les-Bains, just over 5 miles away is a charming, spa town and offers restaurants, bars, a small cinema, a casino as well as a variety of shops. There is a 9-hole golf course nearby.
There are colourful weekly markets in the area, all within a 20 to 30 minute car ride away. Michelin Map No.83 is useful for finding your way about the area.
is on the main bus route from St Pons to Bédarieux and the bus stop is
just over half a mile from the house. There is a railway station in Bédarieux
(10 miles away). Twice a day there is a bus to the TGV station in Montpellier.
